The St. Louis SLAM women’s tackle football franchise, the back-to-back defending Tier II national champions of the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA), publicly revealed on Tuesday that they would not be competing in the WFA’s 2018 season that returns in April.
The SLAM won their second straight WFA Tier II title last July with a 42-15 victory over the Tampa Bay Inferno. The 27-point win put the exclamation point on St. Louis’ 10-1 season and third national title overall.
On their official Facebook page Tuesday morning, the team released the following statement.
“It saddens us to announce that we will NOT be taking the field in 2018 to defend our championship.
We are restructuring and rebuilding the team and will continue to provide services to our community.
Thank you to our family, friends, and everyone that has supported this organization (for) we are truly grateful (to) all of you!!!
All SLAM merchandise will be 50% (off in our online store) until EVERYTHING is gone! Visit http://www.stlslamfootball.com.”
Founded in 2003, the SLAM won the WFA National Title in 2009. The franchise suspended operations during the 2014 season, and once new ownership emerged the following year, St. Louis competed in the WFA playoffs and finished 6-3.
The SLAM’s trophy-hoisting 2016 season concluded with a 38-7 win over the aforementioned Inferno en route to a 7-2 record.
