(INDEPENDENCE, MO) So far, so good.
With a quartet of first-half touchdowns, the St. Louis SLAM continued their dominance for their return campaign in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) with a 28-12 victory over the KC Titans Saturday night at Truman High School.
The SLAM, the 2016 and 2017 WFA Tier II national champion, collected the home/home sweep against their Show-Me State rivals and pushed their overall record to 5-0. St. Louis was idle in 2018 and is currently on the quest for their fourth national title.
With their first-half output, one can certainly picture the SLAM making that goal a reality later this summer.
With 2:50 left in the first quarter, St. Louis’ Danielle Price claimed a 52-yard touchdown run to draw first blood and Danielle Thompson’s successful kick afterwards resulted in the SLAM’s 7-0 lead.
On the their next possession early in the second quarter, Kaylee Nuetzling’s 20-yard pass to Price at the 13:40 mark resulted in another score. Thompson added the PAT that widened the SLAM’s lead to 14-0.
With 2:25 left in the half, running back Mary Altepeter surged for a five-yard touchdown run and Thompson’s third successful kick resulted in a 21-0 score.
The SLAM defense punished the Titans offense and St. Louis was able to snare a late red zone drive. Quarterback Jaime Gaal scored on a one-yard plunge with the game clock reaching goose eggs. Thompson’s perfect kicking output was retained prior to intermission and her squad held a 28-0 advantage.
Third quarter scoring was held in check by both squads’ respective defenses and the differential remained the same heading into the final frame.
Late Kansas City touchdowns by Liz Sowers, a 79-yard run off a quarterback fake, and Brittany Williams, a 15-yard run with 2:50 left, resulted in a tighter final score.
The SLAM returns to action at home vs. Minnesota Vixen, Saturday, May 25.
